What is Diabetes?

In general terms, “diabetes” is the body inability to process sugar correctly. When we eat or drink, “pancreas” produces a hormone called “insulin”. Insulin is released into the blood and helps regulate the amount of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. Diabetes is a condition where this process does not run correctly.

The reason why diabetes occurs is because there is no insulin is produced (often called Type 1 Diabetes) by the body. This type of diabetes requires the sufferer to use insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes is the body still produces insulin but the body is resistant to insulin. This is the common type of diabetes is.

Diabetes danger directly threaten the life for the long-term, because high blood sugar levels can damage one’s health. Uncontrolled and prolonged diabetes with high blood sugar levels can cause problems to many organs including kidney, eye, nerve and heart.

Controlling blood sugar with a combination of drugs, diet and exercise will greatly reduce the long-term complications. Recent research shows that 2 out of every 100 people have diabetes. and half of these people do not even know they have it. Many people have diabetes without being aware of it because someone with diabetes looks no different from anyone else.

How do you know if you have diabetes? The easiest way is to check your blood sugar levels. See your doctor. Small sample of your blood, which is obtained by piercing the finger will be checked using a small electronic tester.

Normal blood sugar levels are generally between 72-126 mg / dl or 4-7 mmol / l (where 1 mmol / l = 18mg/dl). If the body is not able to keep blood sugar level within these limits, then the diagnosis is diabetes.

Common Symptoms of Diabetes:

Decrease of Body Weight – Glucose is a form of sugar which function has the primary fuel of  the body. Diabetics can not process it correctly so it will go into the urine and out of the body. Less fuel makes the body’s tissue split to produce energy and make the body lose weight.

Thirsty – No matter how much you drink your mouth still feels dry. Diabetes will worsen if the patient previously often drank sweet drinks. Of course this will increase blood sugar levels and leads to increased thirst.

Frequent urine – Patients with diabetes often to urinate and even with a fairly large volume. In addition, this phenomenon does not account the time, so sleep of patient with diabetes disturbed by having to go to the bathroom at night. On the other hand, high levels of sugar in the blood spill into the urine, so it will taste sweet.

If you experience these symptoms, it does not mean you are a diabetic, then you are encouraged to visit your doctor to make sure. If you have diabetes do not panic! Although there is no cure, but diabetes can be treated so that the long-term complications is reduced or even eliminated.

By knowing exactly what is diabetes and recognizing the symptoms early, you can prevent diabetes in yourself. Start by watching your health and your daily eating habits. Prevention is better than cure in the future!
